What Do Knee Replacements and AI Have in Common?

When I needed my knee replaced, I started sorting doctors the same way I sort anything — what is most important?

For me, the first requirement was that the surgeon had a lot of experience using robotics. The second and more important requirement was how much overall expertise the surgeon had. After all, does anyone pick a surgeon with minimal experience?

 

Some of the non-robotic surgeons had stellar reputations. In fact, one doctor was referred to me by 3 people. He was the guy. But I’d already made up my mind, and I wanted a doctor that used robotics. Period.

 

That left the robotic surgeons. But not all of them were equal. Some were younger and only had experience in the robotics era. They were skilled with technology, but they were lacking those extra years of experience in the operating room that gave me confidence.

 

The surgeon I picked had done it the old way countless times before a robot ever entered his OR. Then, when robotics arrived, he was one of the first to embrace it. Not because he was forced to, but because he understood the work well enough to recognize what technology could do.

 

He knew what he was doing before the machine existed. That meant he also knew what to do when the machine couldn’t answer the question.

 

That’s exactly how I think about Parlance.

 

Parlance has been in business for 30 years. Some people hold that against us and try to diminish our experience, referring to us as a “legacy” solution. There are those who will always chase the new shiny penny.

We have fully embraced AI. Not reluctantly. Not to join the crowd. Many years before the pandemic we recognized how voice AI technology could improve patient access and business operations at health systems large and small. We leaned into it, enhancing our IVR technology solutions. Similarly, my surgeon leaned into robotics because he knew that it would improve his success rate and have a positive impact on his patients. When you actually understand the work, you know what a powerful new tool is worth.

That’s what experience buys you. Not resistance to change, instead the wisdom to know how to use it.
